And if you really want to get out there in the remote wilderness, you might just want to explore the waterway of the Zakko River.

Before we start, though, understand that this is a journey that requires pretty good wilderness experience and skills; hiring a local guide is highly recommend (for safety, and to get more out of the trip). Where you’re going, there’s only one road in, no mobile phone service anywhere and not a single tourist facility to be found. But, if you’re ready, the area offers pristine natural beauty unlike anything you’ve probably ever seen.

The river flows down the western slope of the ancient, 2,300-meter-tall Mt. Iwasuge, the highest point in Shiga Kogen. The mountain itself is a natural treasure, with sub-Alpine coniferous forests near the summit, natural beech forest in the middle ranges, and a vast, deep forest of deciduous trees further down the slopes.

Because of the dense forests and deep valleys of the region, there was almost no development here, even as a major ski resort was being built nearby. Because of the pristine condition of the environment, the river is one of the best fishing spots in all of Japan for iwana, or whitespotted char.

Once again, getting to the best spots to fish for the iwana is a good reason to hire a knowledgeable local guide, as well as for the fact that you probably will have to use ropes and harnesses simply to get in!

But it’s worth the effort, not just for great fishing, but for the breathtaking natural beauty. Because the valleys are so narrow, a series of spectacular waterfalls break the green forest scenery, while the cool breezes flowing down from Mt. Iwasuge make this a very enjoyable place to be in the heat of summer.

It also a great place for trekking or photography, from the first green sprouts bursting through the snow in spring to the bright autumn colors.

Interview Read More Activity Read More There are places in Shin’etsu Shizenyo that really show off Japan’s nat…

["post-20","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
